The short answer. Alexa+ is Amazon's generative-AI version of Alexa. It reached Germany on 7 May 2026 as an early-access service. It costs €22.99 a month without Prime and nothing extra with Prime. It is built for living rooms. If you want a voice assistant that answers customer calls or touches staff data, Alexa+ is the wrong tool, and the reasons are mostly legal.

Amazon said early access would run at least until 15 September 2026 and has not named an end date. Check the terms in your Alexa app before you decide anything. The figures above come from Amazon Germany's launch announcement and German tech press coverage from May to September 2026.
What Alexa+ actually does
Older Alexa answered single commands. Alexa+ holds a conversation, remembers context and finishes jobs from start to end: it can reserve a table, start an audiobook or turn on the heating after a vague hint like "it's cold in here." In the US it has also picked up partner integrations, which we covered in our post on the Expedia, Yelp, Angi and Square integrations. German coverage lists a shorter partner set for now.
What are the differences between Alexa+ and ChatGPT?
They have various roles. Alexa+ does a better job in your home – lights, music, reservations, shopping on Amazon. ChatGPT is more effective for open-ended tasks, like drafting, analysis, and longer documents. The press coverage for the German launch indicates that ChatGPT Plus costs approximately €20 per month, while Alexa+ is the more expensive consumer subscription.
When it comes to company, price is not as important as one question: which is the one you can place a contract behind? Both consumer products are not a plug-and-play solution for automating the customer call. This role is handled by an assistant that is based on business-grade APIs and has your own rules. Two dates matter for planning. The Digital Omnibus entered into force on 27 July 2026 and moved the high-risk AI rules (hiring, credit scoring and similar) to 2 December 2027. The transparency duty in Article 50 was not delayed. The grace period for labelling AI-generated content ends on 2 December 2026 for systems already on the market. On Alexa itself, Amazon says customers can choose not to have recordings stored, through the Alexa privacy settings in the app and at amazon.de/alexaprivacy. That helps a household. It does not give a business a processor agreement, an audit trail or a say over where data sits.
Five signs Alexa+ is not enough for your business
Customers, patients, or clients will talk to it.
Staff would use it with work data. Unmanaged tools like this are how AI agent sprawl becomes a shadow IT problem.
It needs to be integrated with your CRM, booking system, ERP, or ticketing software.
A processor agreement, a named data location, a retention rule, and a means to delete data upon request are required.
You will be asked what the system does; you will need logs, and a handover needs to be made by a human.

What a GDPR compliant voice assistant would look like
Pick one job. Booking appointments, IT support triage, or lead qualification. A narrow scope is easier to secure and is easier to measure.

Carry out the impact assessment in advance. Write the retention rule concurrently, for example, deleting audio when the transcript is stored.
Include the disclosure of the AI at the beginning of each call, and have the human hand over one step.
Log, test, and prepare an incident path that conforms to the 24-hour NIS2 window.
Review every quarter. Models, prices, and rules continue to change.

What was the value of a missed call to you?
Here is a crude estimate of the size. Missed calls per week x percentage of calls that would have booked x average value of a job x 52. Say 20 missed calls, a quarter of them would have booked, at €400 each: 20 × 0.25 × €400 × 52 comes to €104,000 a year. This is an example so replace it with your figures. If the payoff is big, a voice assistant quickly pays for itself. If it's small, you might not require one for now.

Alexa+ will be more powerful in the home setting and day-to-day use. ChatGPT is more powerful at writing and analysis. When you're looking for a business option, be sure to select one based on the contract terms and on who controls the data, not on a list of features.
Should I inform callers that it's an AI?
Yes, in most cases. This should be required from Article 50 of the EU AI Act, from 2 August 2026, unless it is clear from the context. Repeat this at the beginning of the call.
